Mid-winters 2014

The Sarasota Sailing Squadron once again hosted the mid-winters March 21, 22 and 23 2014.
Also sailing on the Day Sailer Course were the Albacore Fleet, the Flying Scots and the Windmills.
Unlike the normal Sarasota 20 knot winds for the mids, Day 1 was light and fluky at 5-10 maybe.   There were many lead changes on the first leg but the most coveted prize is the Dacchanalian Trophy which goes to the team who is the first around the windward mark in the first race of the series.  All the teams must supply a bottle of wine and the winner gets all the wine and the trophy.  They always share.

This year Bob and Leslie Damon from Virginia won the honor.  The trophy reads

"Youth gives us love and roses while age gives us friends and wine".

First Place - Chris and Dave Kelly on "Swamp Thing"

Second Place- Mark Rother and Lil Epstein on "Hound Dog"

Third Place - Bob and Leslie Damon on "Jamaican Me Crazy"

We had 5 races on Day 1. Kelly's were ahead with 6, Rother was 2 behind with 8 and the Damon's another 2 behind with 10.  Day 2 brought us to the North Course, but again the wind was light and the water was choppy.  The Damon's started out the day with two bullets and Mark finished the day with two bullets.  Day 2 put Mark in the lead by 1, Kelly's second and the Damon's close behind.  Day 3 was almost cancelled because of no wind but the Albacores and the Day Sailers went out and a beautiful sea breeze came in at about 10 knots.  Luck was with the Kelly's on the last day.  They got two bullets which secured first place.  Mark had a second on the first race and the second race was neck and neck on the downwind.  Foul trouble put him out of the running for first.  The Damon's took a second, and after his turns Mark ended up with a 5th but still good enough for an overall 2nd place.
